Helena Schnee Writing

Hello....

I was born in a small town in Pennsylvania and grew up surrounded by quiet streets and familiar faces. There was never a time in my life when I didn’t want to be a writer. Growing up in Lancaster, I spent countless hours in my room, filling page after page with my thoughts.

The first diary entry I remember was about Finn Hudson from Glee. And as one diary filled, another began, until my freshman year when I started keeping two: one for my life and everything it entailed, and another solely for food. My thoughts, experiences, worries, and fears all revolved around food. How I wanted it, how I didn’t deserve it, and how hard it was to go without it.

Eventually, the diary about food overtook the other, and writing became a constant way to process my life. I wrote obsessively until I was hospitalized, and even there, the first thing I did was grab paper and a pen and start writing again.

At 20 I moved to New York City to pursue a career as a novelist. When I’m not writing, I’m out exploring the city. Dining with friends, visiting museums, Yankees games, the zoo, the circus, and the Seaport. I’m constantly reading, walking, and drinking. Taking in everything that New York has to offer. Walking along the Hudson River with music in my ears or a friend beside me is one of my favorite ways to unwind. While karaoke was a big hit when I first arrived, I’ve since moved on to any bar with a pool table. At home, I love watching horror movies with my roommate on the couch. Ordering in then saying we should cook more. Moving to New York is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I’m grateful every day for the opportunities and experiences the city provides.
Though writing is work, I hardly notice the hours passing by. It has truly always been my dream to be a writer, and now that it has come true, I can say it is everything I hoped it would be. I am so happy to be here.

In this city, in this career, and in this life.
